Spanish Curriculum Statement: Holden Clough Primary School
Intent
At Holden Clough Primary School, our intent is to foster a love for languages and cultural diversity through a rich and engaging Spanish curriculum. We aim to:
- Develop pupils’ confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish.
- Build foundational language skills progressively from Year 1 to Year 6.
- Encourage curiosity about other cultures and promote global citizenship.
- Ensure pupils leave primary school with a strong base in Spanish that prepares them for further language learning in secondary education.
Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive, accessible, and enjoyable, using thematic units such as “Under the Sea,” “In My Town,” and “Little Red Riding Hood” to make learning meaningful and relevant.
Implementation
The Spanish curriculum is delivered through a structured progression model, divided into five learning slots per year group. It follows a clear pathway:
- Starting Off (SO) in KS1 introduces basic vocabulary and greetings through engaging themes like “The Circus” and “Minibeasts.”
- Moving On (MO) and Early Language (E) in lower KS2 build on this foundation with topics such as “Animals,” “Vegetables,” and “Seasons,” incorporating phonics and storytelling.
- Intermediate (I) and Progressive (P) stages in upper KS2 deepen linguistic understanding with grammar, sentence structure, and conversational skills through units like “Do You Have a Pet?”, “My Home,” and “At the Weekend.”
Phonics units (X) are embedded throughout to support pronunciation and decoding skills. Cross-curricular links are made wherever possible, enriching pupils’ learning experiences by connecting Spanish with subjects such as music, literacy, geography, and storytelling. Cultural elements are also woven into lessons to enhance engagement and broaden pupils’ understanding of the Spanish-speaking world.
Impact
By the end of Year 6, pupils at Holden Clough will:
- Be able to understand and use a range of Spanish vocabulary and phrases confidently.
- Demonstrate growing fluency and accuracy in spoken and written Spanish.
- Show enthusiasm for language learning and an appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures.
- Be well-prepared for the transition to secondary school language learning.
Progress is monitored through formative assessments, pupil voice, and teacher observations. The curriculum’s spiral structure ensures that learning is revisited and reinforced, allowing pupils to build on prior knowledge and achieve sustained progress.
