Counting to 100 forwards and backwards.  Number bonds to 20 practice.

Ask your child to count as many objects as they can find - this could be at home, in the car or even on the way to school! If you feel your child is confident you could challenge your child further by giving them a number to count up or down from. Number bonds are simply pairs of numbers that make up a given number. For more information on number bonds, you can look here

These spellings will be tested on a Friday. If your child is feeling confident in spelling these words, can they use these in a sentence? To further extend your child, they could include some tricky words in their sentences.

Information about phonics

Throughout Year 1, children will be focusing on Phase 5 of the school's Letters and Sounds phonics scheme.  They will be taught to recognise and use alternative ways of pronouncing the graphemes and spelling the phonemes already taught.

Children will use alternative ways of pronouncing the graphemes (e.g. the ‘c’ in coat and city). Children will also be taught to recognise an increasing number of high frequency words automatically and knowledge and skills of phonics will be the prime approach to reading and spelling.

If you would like to practice some phonic sounds with your child at home, you can use the phonics sound mats below to help them improve.
