Phonics

During the first half term of Year One, the children complete what is known as 'Phase Four' during phonics lessons. Phase Four involves reading and writing words that contain the graphemes (letter/s that make sounds) taught in reception, but within increasingly more complex words.

The children then spend the rest of their time in Year One working on 'Phase Five'. During Phase Five, children continue to build on the phonics skills that they learnt in Phases One to Four. They add an additional 19 graphemes to their repertoire, learn more spelling rules and patterns, and gradually improve their reading speed and accuracy. Many of the new graphemes in this phase introduce different ways to write the same sound, and different ways to sound out the same grapheme. The "s" sound, for example, can be written as either s as in serial or c as in cerealWhen the children start Phase Five, weekly sheets will be sent home to show the graphemes, phonetic words and tricky words that will be taught during phonics lessons.
